Coming Home? The 2026 Guide to Importing Your Car Duty-Free
For many Kenyans living abroad, the dream of “moving back home” is often accompanied by the desire to bring back a piece of their life from the UK, USA, or Dubai—specifically, their car.
But did you know that as a Returning Resident, you could potentially save between KES 1.5 Million and KES 5 Million in taxes? Under the East African Community Customs Management Act, you are entitled to one duty-free vehicle import. However, the Kenya Revenue Authority (KRA) is incredibly strict. One missing stamp can cost you your life savings.
The 2026 Eligibility Checklist
To qualify for the exemption this year, you must meet these non-negotiable criteria:
-
Age & Residency: You must be at least 18 years old and have resided outside Kenya for at least two continuous years.
-
The “Ownership” Rule: You must have owned and used the vehicle for at least 12 months before your return.
-
The 90-Day Window: The car must be shipped and arrive in Kenya within 90 days of your arrival date.
The “Left-Hand Drive” (LHD) Solution
Living in the US or Germany? You can’t bring your LHD car to Kenya. However, the law allows a “Replacement” provision. You can sell your LHD car abroad and use the proceeds to import a Right-Hand Drive (RHD) unit from Japan or the UK through Cars Request Africa. KRA will still grant you the duty-free status!
Common Traps to Avoid
-
Short Visits: If you visited Kenya for more than 90 days total in the last two years, KRA may disqualify your “resident” status.
-
The 8-Year Rule: Even if it’s duty-free, the car must be manufactured in 2019 or later (for the 2026 calendar year).
-
Commercial Use: You cannot import a truck, van, or bus duty-free. It must be a personal passenger vehicle (Sedan, SUV, or Double-Cab).
