The Toyota Land Cruiser Prado J250 is the latest generation of the Land Cruiser Prado, a mid‑size, ladder‑frame 4x4 SUV that slots below the full‑size Land Cruiser 300 but keeps the same rugged off‑road DNA. It is aimed at customers who want a more compact, practical, yet still very capable SUV for mixed city‑and‑bush use.
Compact‑ish, rugged 4x4 layout
The J250 Prado is a five‑door SUV about 4.9–5.0 metres long, with a 1980 mm width, tall roof, and a ladder‑frame chassis for durability. It usually seats five to seven, depending on market and spec, with a three‑row layout and a rear‑hinged tailgate. Ground clearance is around 220–230 mm, with good approach/departure angles, making it well‑suited to rough‑road and light‑to‑medium off‑road work.
2.8‑litre turbo‑diesel with mild‑hybrid option
Most J250 Prados use a 2.8‑litre 1GD‑FTV four‑cylinder turbo‑diesel engine producing about 201–204 hp and 500 Nm of torque, available from 1,600–2,800 rpm. In many markets (especially Australia and Europe) this is paired with a 48‑volt mild‑hybrid system, giving slight extra torque and smoother start‑stop behaviour. Power is sent through an 8‑speed “Direct Shift” automatic (or sometimes a 6‑speed on lower‑spec imports) and full‑time 4WD with a dual‑range transfer case, so it is very capable off‑road. The 2.8‑D‑4D version does 0–100 km/h in about 10–10.5 seconds, with a top speed around 175 km/h. A 2.7‑litre petrol version is also offered in some regions, with about 163 hp and 246 Nm, slower in acceleration but still adequate for normal use.
Fuel efficiency and tank size
The 2.8‑litre diesel‑hybrid Prado typically returns about 7.9–8.5 L/100 km (roughly 12–13 km/l) in mixed driving, which is very good for a heavy 4x4. The fuel tank is around 87–110 litres, depending on spec and market, giving it strong long‑range capability for highway and safari‑style trips.
Off‑road and terrain‑handling systems
The J250 Prado keeps the Land Cruiser‑300‑style Multi‑Terrain Select, Crawl Control, Hill‑Descent Control, Hill‑Start Assist, and selectable 4WD drive modes (Auto, 4H, 4L, and special off‑road modes). It runs on a ladder‑frame chassis with independent front suspension and a solid rear axle, giving it a good balance of on‑road comfort and off‑road strength. The long wheelbase and raised ride height help over rough ground, and the 3.5‑tonne braked‑towing capacity make it useful for trailers and caravans.
Practical, tech‑forward interior
Inside, the J250 Prado offers a more modern and car‑like cabin than previous generations, with a large 12‑inch central touchscreen, digital instrument cluster options, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, head‑up display on higher trims, and a surround‑view camera. Seats are comfortable for long drives, and the rear area is fairly spacious for adults in the second row, with a more cramped but usable third row. Safety tech includes multiple airbags, traction and stability control, adaptive cruise (on higher trims), lane‑keeping, blind‑spot monitoring, and rear‑cross‑traffic alert in many markets.
Ideal for mixed‑use SUV buyers
The Land Cruiser Prado J250 suits families, farmers, safari operators, and urban‑to‑bush drivers who want a tough, reliable, and relatively fuel‑efficient 4x4 with enough space for five–seven people and daily‑use comfort. It works as a town‑run vehicle, school‑run family hauler, and light‑to‑medium off‑road workhorse, giving you a very usable version of the Land Cruiser formula at a lower size and, in many markets, a lower price than the full‑size 300‑series.
